Starting school is an important milestone in every child’s life and at ASSR we take the transition from nursery/pre-school to school very seriously to ensure that all children settle well and are happy in their new environment.
All children starting school in Reception are visited in their nursery or pre-school setting by the class teacher and TA. This gives us the opportunity to speak to each child’s key worker, but also to see the children in a familiar setting where they are more confident.
Following the nursery visit all parents and carers are invited to a meeting at ASSR to discuss the arrangements for starting school and parents have the opportunity to ask questions.
The children are then invited to come and spend two afternoons in school getting to know their new surroundings.
On one of the afternoons the children are joined by their buddies who will look after them when they arrive in September.
Finally in September, just before the children start school, the class teacher visits the children at home.
In reception the children learn through a variety of fun and interactive play based activities in a caring environment that enables all children to develop and learn at their own pace.
Children also develop their reading, writing, maths and communication skills so they have a firm foundation on which to build all future learning.
Links between home and school are very important and each child has a home school link book and parents/carers can speak to the teacher each morning. Formal meetings also take place at key points during the year.
