The school curriculum is based on the National Curriculum which is statutory and is taught by well qualified teachers with a range of expertise and experience.

The curriculum is focused on the core subjects of English, maths, science and ICT to ensure that all children achieve high standards in essential areas of learning.

We also aim to achieve a balance across all subjects to ensure that children apply their skills and knowledge to a range of topics so all their interests are met.

The curriculum is taught through a variety of whole school topics that are differentiated to the abilities and age of the children. The curriculum is brought alive through a variety of trips, experiences and visitors.

In the past year children events have included Glyndebourne, the planetarium, pantomime, themed days, Olympic Festival, sporting competitions and singing concerts .

ASSR is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and we believe it is important to use our beautiful surroundings to support children’s learning. Each Tuesday afternoon the children take their learning outside and an outside provider is used to make the learning come alive.

Music is also an important part of the curriculum and we believe each child should be given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. Years 3-6 have a specialist music teacher visit them each week who teaches them recorder, percussion and singing.

Physical Education (PE) helps children to develop a range of movement skills and promotes a healthy and active lifestyle. Children take part in 2 hours of physical activity each week and can choose to take part in a wide range of clubs after school including football, tennis and multi-skills.

If you would like more detail about the curriculum please see the Topic Overviews under each class page or telephone the school office.
